Splendid Kids Photography – An exclusive interview with Lilia Alvarado
Photographing kids is never an easy job to do. Unless you are extremely passionate about it, you cannot get the best of results.
We got a chance to interview Lilia Alvarado who specialize in kids photography and we got to know what goes in the making of beautiful soul touching kid portraits. Here’s and exclusive interview with Lilia Alvarado.
Gaurav : What is your inspiration behind photographing kids? Was Kids Photography, something that you always wanted to do ?
Lilia : I never thought that Photography would turn into such a passion. Since childhood, I have been around a very creative environment.
Influenced by my father’s artistic vision, I pursued a college major in fine art and graphics in Russia. It was so natural for me to make the transition to photography after having children.
First, it was just a hobby, a creative outlet, which opened up several doors of opportunities the moment I began sharing my work on the internet. That’s when I realized that photography is more than just a pastime to me.
Gaurav : Do you also take other professional assignments other than for the kids photography ?
Lilia : I do take other professional assignments. Though I do not specialize in weddings photography, children and family fine Art Portraiture Photography and Kids Photography would always remain my primary focus.
I do most of my work in the USA, but I have traveled to Europe at the request of my clients to do family portrait sessions. I offer destination photography as a part of my services.
Gaurav : Your pictures look exceptional. How much does better camera gear matter in creating such pictures ?
Lilia : Thank you so much for your feedback! There are many makes and models of cameras out there. I use Canon because I started with Canon. I have not had a chance to use a different brand.
There is no doubt that better camera gear is helping to achieve and improve certain results, but in my opinion developing a vision is more vital and important.
I have seen many amazing images created with very basic equipment long before the advances in technology and gear existed. A camera is just a tool; there is so much more involved in creating a great image.
Gaurav : What are your views about post processing? Which applications do you use for your images ?
Lilia : I love image post processing as much as I love photography process. When I’ve captured an image that I know has potential, I can’t wait to get that RAW file opened up so that I can get creative with my processing and to get this image to the next level.
I work in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CC, I am very comfortable in using this programs without presets or commercially bought actions.
Gaurav : How can aspiring photographers learn from you ?
Lilia : I offer private one on one lessons and group workshops on kids photography. All information can be found on my website.
Gaurav : What are your future plans ? Any projects you would like to tell your readers ?
Lilia : I have few photography related projects I am working on right now.
Gaurav : Tell us more about your workshops. What does a typical workshop day consist of ?
Lilia : During my workshops, I talk about where to look for inspiration and ideas, how to choose locations and work under different light situations.
I share my photography and in-camera techniques to benefit post processing quality and final imagery results. I explain how to use composition principles to create stronger images.
Together with participants, we work on achieving mood and atmosphere in photographs. I teach how to work and engage with children to capture natural looking kids portraits.
Normally I have designed two types of workshops.
The private one where I meet one on one and we do a hands-on session with kid-model/s, props, etc. and on the second day we review, analyze and edit the images together.
The second workshop is similar to the previous workshop; the main difference is a number of photographers attending the workshop. Usually this workshop is conducted for a group, unlike the first one which is conducted for just one individual.
Gaurav : Great ! What advice would you give to photographers who are beginning into portfolio or kid photography ?
Lilia : Everyone has their own path, something that has worked for me will not necessarily work for you. Stay true to yourself, it doesn’t matter what others do and how they do it. It is all upon you.
If you feel you are on the right path, don’t allow random negativity or a negative comment affect how you feel about your work. Develop your passion for photography!
