Wasp Photography – A rare video captured by a macro photographer
Malaysia. On a drizzling day about 2 years ago, after work, Lim was walking in around the factory compound, He noticed a wasp flying around its nest absorbing water and blowing the water away trying to keep the nest dry.
It is a common practice among winged insects to blow bubbles to help regulate their body temperature. Amazed by the incident, Lim rushed back to office and got his camera to capture this wonderful works of nature.
The gears used for above wasp photography were his DSLR, a macro lens and external flash attached with custom made diffuser.
No tripod was used as the wasp’s nest was very high. Manual focusing did help for sharper images.
Lim admitted that sometimes he held a flower behind the wasp’s nest to produce a better background of the water drop, making the photo more presentable and look more natural.
Wasp Photography is a bit tricky. It was not easy to capture this behavior of the wasp Lim said.
A lot of times, he had to wait patiently for until his hands and body would aches while holding the camera, there were times he would not get a single image even after struggling for long hours.
Lim says; this behavior of the wasp is rare in macro photography.
After sharing my images on social networking sites, especially on Facebook, I got a very good response from lots of friends. Most of them showed great interest on my photos.
I also received some negative feedback’s or complaints on my wasp photography claiming that I used a wing cut dead body of wasp and water bubble was edited using Photoshop.
Even though, I explained to them this was the nature behavior for wasp and my photos are genuine but some of them still had doubts on my explanation.
Soon, I recorded a video of this wasp activity which can be viewed in the following video.
Lim further says I am willing to share my 2 years of experience on my favorite subject “Wasp Blowing a water Bubble”, I am always willing to share my experiences and knowledge to those who are interested.
I feel delighted to have captured this special moment in macro wasp photography. Hopefully with my sharing on wasp behavior, some of my friends can build up an interest to on this subject.
I can assure you that you will enjoy shooting the photos and appreciate every detail Mother Nature can offer which we cannot see with our naked eyes.
